today we welcome another newcomer this time writer of fantasy: Molly Greenhouse aka Monica Serra, who presents his debut novel.
-Hello Molly is my pleasure to host you in my blog Italian Emerging Writers. Would you introduce yourself to readers? Hello. First, the pleasure is mine. This is a really interesting blog and I know that is this: I am pleased to be among the guests! Let me introduce myself briefly. Molly Greenhouse is a dynamic forty-two who has finally decided to devote himself "seriously" to his lifelong passion, namely writing. My first novel Heart of the Dragon is a fantasy published in 2009 with the publishing house Taarna Runde. Do not be fooled by the nom de plume, but in reality are very Italian. Molly is a pet name by which friends call me (my name is Monica) and the Greenhouse is nothing more than the literal English translation of my surname (Serra). Having written a fantasy novel, it seemed nice use of imagination in proposing a name and choose to keep it for publication was shared with the publisher. Moreover, even my favorite fantasy writer Robin Hobb, use a stage name ... maybe you can be a good omen!
-What is your relationship with writing and what they mean to you? When did you discover this passion?
I could not imagine my life without writing: it is a bit 'like breathing, essential to survival. I find that to leave my thoughts through a story is very relaxing and I finally found the courage to share my pleasure with others. In fact, I could not tell when I discovered I love writing. In elementary school I wrote stories and stories for my classmates and from then on I've always written, but everything always ended up in a drawer. Then, after a difficult period in which to write has helped me to dispel many fears, I finally found the courage to get involved Heart of Dragon and shows that it is never too late to realize their dreams.
-What do you usually do while you write? Do you have a particular creative process?
The creative process from which come my stories is a bit 'special. The idea may have originated from a landscape, a sentence from a face. There and then, when I realize that something hit me, I throw down a few lines on the first piece of paper that happens to me (much to the distress of my family, who are inundated with "pizzini" ...)
Gradually around those four words, characters begin to appear, places and stories and then I start to tell what is happening. The characters start to act on impulse which I have given them and then come to life to life. More than once I've had to put his hand to the plot of a story written because of some "out-sider" which was overwhelmingly in the limelight. Following the characters, through the places where they move, the story takes shape and I write all that I see happen, even in a temporally incoherent. Rarely know where a story is getting at, but when I went with the players at the end, then start "editing". In fact, it's a bit 'as opposed to a film I order sequences and systems so that la storia segua finalmente una linea temporale logica, dopodiché inizio la revisione. Questa è la parte che mi piace di più, anche se ti assicuro che è faticosissima: tra una scena e l’altra cominciano a inserirsi episodi che in un primo momento mi erano sfuggiti, oppure personaggi che avevo inizialmente creato come secondari fanno qualcosa che mi costringe a dar loro uno spazio imprevisto, con conseguente necessità di riscrivere gran parte del racconto.
-A cosa ti sei ispirata per scrivere il tuo romanzo d’esordio "Cuore di Drago"? Cuore di Drago nasce dalla necessità personale di ritrovare un equilibrio perduto. Il percorso che ho voluto raccontare nel libro è quello di una ricerca, la stessa che io ho dovuto affrontare dopo un difficilissimo periodo della mia vita. Ambientare la storia in un mondo fantastico, ma tuttavia credibile, è stato fondamentale. Trovare la spada forgiata dal cuore dell’ultimo drago significa per ciascuno dei personaggi arrivare alla stabilità e da questa ricerca usciranno un po’ tutti vincitori, come è stato per me.
-Qual è stata la gestazione del romanzo? L’idea iniziale, successivamente, come si è sviluppata?
Tutto è nato da un paesaggio. Ero in vacanza in montagna, ma dato che non so sciare, mi godevo il sole e il panorama. Guardandomi intorno mi sono resa conto di trovarmi in un posto incredibilmente adatto ad ambientarci una storia fantastica. Così, a pagina 71, potete leggere l’idea da cui è partita la mia avventura: una valle innevata, avvolta dal silenzio ovattato e severo dei monti che la circondano… Tutto intorno a questa descrizione, la trama si è tessuta quasi da sola e i personaggi sono comparsi via via che la storia prendeva forma.
-Dalle tue descrizioni si nota che ami molto le montagne. Hai trovato ispirazione per l’ambientazione del romanzo nei luoghi in cui vivi?
I love to travel and there is so much in my description of what I saw. The mountains are an ideal setting for a fantasy novel, the mountain is solemn and timeless and has worked perfectly on my Heart of Dragon. And who lives in my area (a few kilometers north of Rome) Roccantica certainly recognize, so I was inspired by the magnificent castle of Bracciano.
Annya-I personally loved much: it's a strong girl but at the same time rich in humanity, a particularly successful. How much of Molly in her?
I tried to give a precise characterization Each character, even giving the good people of any defect that could make them credible and interesting. Annya is definitely a character that represents me, although I think I put a little 'Molly's in all those that appear in the novel. Among the female figures is particularly dear to me Rhian, but my favorite is Yoriko: I find it terribly human, despite the depository of great powers. My only regret is that he has given little space to the figure of the Sorcerer would be interesting to further his arrogant personality and irreverent at the same time, but in the context of the plot was not essential, so I simply make it appear only for the time necessary ..
-Cosa caratterizza questo romanzo? Secondo te qual è il suo punto di forza e per quale motivo i lettori che ti stanno leggendo dovrebbero acquistarlo?
Un appunto che mi è stato mosso riguarda la brevità del romanzo, che invece io ritengo uno dei suoi punti di forza. In effetti, Cuore di Drago è un po’ “anomalo” rispetto a una tradizione che vuole il romanzo fantasy lunghissimo e magari suddiviso in più volumi. Il libro è autoconclusivo e la trama si svolge in modo lineare e completo nell’arco delle circa 200 pagine che la compongono. Il mio obiettivo era quello di accompagnare il lettore attraverso la storia senza annoiarlo, so you do get to the end with the regret of having to turn the last page and close the book. I hope I did.
-Do you think you still devote to fantasy? What are your favorite authors?
in fantasy I think I found the best way to express myself. The genre lends itself very well to a manipulation of reality that allows you to create a credible story without giving too many logical explanations for what happens, entertainment and making the reader dream. To make you understand better, I consider the fantasy a bit 'as the modern evolution of the story. Characters, themes and environments come to some by the fantastic tales that speak of castles, princes, wizards and enchanted forests. Unfortunately, the modern world is not the kind with the same respect that was given in the past for sure, the tales enjoyed greater consideration than that given today to fantasy novels, considered a subgenre, especially in Italy. Yet there are real masterpieces of fantasy.
As for my favorite authors, is a question of one million euro. Certainly there are many, and to them for inspiration. Let's say I want to have clear and engaging writing by Robin Hobb, the extraordinary ability to characterize the tangle of plots and characters of George RR Martin and the fervent, incredible fantasia di Neil Gaiman. E se ogni tanto facesse capolino tra le righe lo humor irresistibile di Terry Pratchett, sarei la scrittrice fantasy perfetta!
-Questa è la tua prima pubblicazione. Ci parli un po’ della tua ricerca di una casa editrice e di come sei riuscita a pubblicare? Un' esperienza positiva o negativa?
La ricerca dell’editore è stata mirata: se scrivi fantasy, è inutile inviare il manoscritto a una casa editrice che pubblica saggistica o gialli. Tra le varie proposte editoriali (alcune interessanti, altre assolutamente “indecenti”), ho scelto quella di una piccola ma seria casa editrice, Runde Taarn, I would like to thank you for giving me the opportunity to see realized my baby. I found myself very comfortable with them, are serious and competent professionals. The work that has preceded the publication has been flawless (a few corrections to the truth, but where they were made, the text has benefited in clarity) as I am satisfied with regard to the promotional aspect (the publisher has organized presentations choral and individual throughout Italy, the next will do in Rome on November 27 at the Library Literary Cafe Mangiaparole with another rookie fantasy author). So I would say that was a positive experience and I hope to work with them again.
-Cosa ne pensi da autrice del panorama editoriale legato agli esordienti? Quali pensi siano i difetti e cosa dovrebbe essere migliorato?
Qui tocchiamo un tasto dolente e rischiamo di aprire una discussione infinita. Nel nostro paese, purtroppo, vige il malcostume di approfittare delle situazioni. Nel campo dell’industria libraria, molti si autodefiniscono editori e cercano di far leva sulle velleità e sui sogni di chi si presenta con un manoscritto per spillargli dei soldi. Non mi riferisco a case editrici che magari chiedono un piccolo contributo all’autore (il più delle volte l’acquisto copie proposto è minimo rispetto alla tiratura the book) because you do not call or Mondadori Feltrinelli, but those so-called publishers ads that are bombastic and devoid of any foundation to convince the writer to "public" spending a lot of euro and then having to deal personally damned distribution. We have so many good authors in Italy, but the big publishers often prefer to bet on foreign names for purely economic reasons. This is especially true in the fantasy genre: my pseudonym (born to play, as dicevo all’inizio della nostra chiacchierata) è stato mantenuto appunto per motivazioni commerciali.
-Quali sono i tuoi progetti futuri? Hai già un altro romanzo in fase di scrittura o in fase di pubblicazione? Puoi darci qualche news?
Il mio secondo romanzo è già in mano agli editori, posso solo anticipare che ho cercato di staccarmi dai cliché (stavolta, niente draghi) e che il risultato finale ricorda i romanzi cavallereschi: spero di potervi dare presto notizie più dettagliate. Per il resto, sto lavorando a un altro paio di idee, sempre in ambito fantastico, anche se in questo periodo sono concentrata a combattere una battaglia personale molto difficile (gravi problemi di salute, purtroppo, ma io non demordo).
